Channelcaster Help
Welcome to Channelcaster.com. This site hosts a Java applet that allows you to surf four web pages at once without the bother of actually clicking on links. Think of it as a power browser.
Help Items
- Click the Channelcast! button to view new pages in all four windows.
- Select the desired channel (e.g. News, Security, etc.) for each window, or click a channel selection to get a new page in that window.
- Make sure your browser window is maximized. If it's not, maximize it now and then click the Reload button in your browser.
- Click the Help button to view this help page.
Notes
-
The idea for this applet came to Sun Microsystems engineer Ken Shirriff in a dream. I decided to hack around with it as a Java demo in October 1996 but got sidetracked until October 1999, when I needed a way to work out a new DSL line.
-
The categories run through a list of URLs I've put in the configuration file. I've tried to select useful pages with a preference for those offer tools, gadgets, or interactive programs.
-
You can check out Shirriff's original at http://www.sunlabs.com/~shirriff/java/surfer.html.
Disclaimers
-
The Channelcaster applet causes your browser to load pages from other sites. I don't control what's on these pages, so I accept no responsibility if you don't like what you find there. If you don't like something, click on the Channelcast! button to view something else.
-
Note that you will, of course, need to be hooked to an external network to use this applet.
Since the Channelcaster loads multiple web pages at one time, it's not going to be much fun with a slow network connection.
-
Link rot is inevitable.
-
Don't be surprised if this program crashes your browser.
